Our caregivers have witnessed many cases of elderly
depression and anxiety in their daily travels. Recent studies point out the
benefits for all ages of regular exercise to treat these illnesses, and improve
the lives of those who suffer with them.
One family member of mine recommends Tai Chi to improve
balance and core strength. It can be very low impact, and geared to the
elderly. Another option might be a gentle yoga program.
Of course, no one should begin an exercise regimen without
discussing it with their physician, especially an elderly person, but there are
affordable options in the Belfast area to participate in these types of
exercise.
The Belfast YMCA offers a Tai Chi class, and the BelfastDance Studio offers Gentle Yoga classes. Drop-ins are welcome in both cases.
