A Caregiver’s Point of View… My scariest day at work....

Today in the office we were talking about how over the years some of our cases hit us harder than others. I recapped my many years working with children, the homeless, mentally disturbed individuals, and the elderly…and realized there was only one case which shook me. Funny to think a kind elderly man was the hardest, scariest and heart-wrenching case I have ever had. One of my colleagues look confused and said, “really? It wasn’t when you worked for that other company with that crazy guy, that stabbed you in the leg with a steak knife?” Hard to believe a 300lb grown man stabbing me in the leg was less scary than walking in and finding an elder man in need of great help. What is Hospice Care?

One of the services Private Home Care, Inc. provides is in-home Hospice care. We wanted to share what this care involves. Hospice Care is designed to give supportive care to people and their families in the final phase of a terminal illness and focuses on comfort and quality of life, rather than cure. The goal is to enable patients to be comfortable and free of pain, so that they live each day as fully as possible. Hospice programs generally are home-based. What is Hospice? 1. Hospice is decided upon once a licensed physician has made the determination that the end of life is near (generally within 6 months). 2. Hospice is based upon the belief that each person has the right to die pain free and with dignity, and that families will receive the necessary support to allow this. 3. What is Hospice responsible for? Equipment may include: Oxygen tank Portable O2 Concentrators Bedside Commodes Infection control items IV supplies (if administering IV medications)

Finding Yourself…

When work, family and all aspects of your life collide and the world seems as though it is pushing just a little too hard, take a break. Jump for the exit and do what makes you happy, even if only for a minute. Listen to that song on the radio as loud as you can, talk to that special person, sit by the ocean or scream at the top of your lungs! Do what’s going to make you feel better! If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of those who count on you! Self-care is so important and yet so many people neglect it. This past week I finally took my own advice and ran for the exit. My children were safe and secure with their father, my mother was his back up if something happened and I ran full speed ahead. I work for PHCI during the week as well as teaching during the week and weekends.
